Online Seminar: Countering China’s influence campaigns in Europe
22 February, 2022 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

How is China influencing our political elites, media, civil society and academia? And what can we do about it?
Compared to the efforts of Putin’s Russia, Beijing’s political influence operations in Europe have received little attention. However, the Chinese Communist Party’s influence campaigns pose a challenge to liberal democracy as well as Europe’s values and interests.
On February 22, The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS) and the Institut français des Pays-Bas have the pleasure to invite you to an online seminar reflecting on Chinese influence and explore Europe’s response options.
A panel of experts will analyze the toolset deployed by China across different arenas, reflect on the effects of Chinese political influencing efforts on American and European elite and public opinion, and finally, explore response options both at the national and European level.
Speakers include:
- Jean-Baptiste Jeangène Vilmer, director IRSEM at the French Ministry for the Armed Forces.
- Paul Charon, Director for Intelligence, Strategic Foresight, and Hybrid Threats at IRSEM.
- Louk Faesen, Strategic Analyst at the Cyber Policy and Resilience Programme, HCSS.
- Lotje Boswinkel, Strategic Analyst on Information Manoeuvre, HCSS.
French Ambassador to the Netherlands Luis Vassy will provide opening remarks, and HCSS Deputy Director Michiel Rademaker will moderate the discussion.
