Municipality The Hague – Lecture on “Why European Security is Human Security”

29 November, 2023 @ 4:00 pm 6:30 pm

Overview

The Municipality of The Hague will be hosting a special lecture at The Hague Humanity Hub on “Why European Security is Human Security”. The lecture will be held by Tara Verma who is a Visiting Fellow Foreign Policy, of the Brookings Institution’s Center on the United States and Europe. She will explore the developments in Europe’s reckoning of its own role on the international stage, and the role it has to endorse in making the multilateral order work.

Lecture Road Map

This lecture will address strategic shifts in European thinking since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, as well as ramifications of European foreign policy decision-making and consequences for the general public. With the advent of social media and the information age, citizens and decisions-makers are provided with news in real-time. The two key challenges for Europe and European citizens now are to ensure that in an increasingly fragmented world, the European voice distinguishes itself as a convening force for allies and partners, as well as to answer to its citizens’ preoccupations. How Europe addresses the tension between internal and external challenges – after Brexit, the 2015 migration crisis, after the shock of a Donald Trump administration, Covid, Russia’s war on Ukraine, and tragic developments in the Middle East – will be an indicator of its willingness and capacity to act.
