Democracy Drinks: New Ways of Democracy in Internet Governance

4 June @ 17:30 19:30

Step into the future of internet governance with the upcoming edition of the #DemocracyDrinks!

Join us on June 4th as we explore the evolving role of democracy in global internet governance. Who sets the rules in this all-encompassing virtual space? What will the impact of the upcoming EU elections be? Are multistakeholder frameworks the key to a new and improved democratic process?

Gain insights from world-leading experts and engage in a lively debate over drinks. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of the dialogue shaping the future of the digital world!

This event is made possible by Leiden University (Global Transformations and Governance Challenges programme) to bring fascinating perspectives from leading scholars on internet governance.

Speakers

Alisa Heaver – Alisa has been working on internet governance related issues for the Dutch government for over 3 years. She started her career at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, focusing on cybersecurity-related issues. Now, she is a Senior Policy Officer with the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. She is also a member of the Multistakeholder Advisory Group and she represents the Dutch government in the Internet Cooperation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Jamal Shahin – Jamal’s research interests focus on digital sovereignty and related issues, specifically in a European (Union) context, as well as how to optimise dialogue between disciplines to ensure relevant and useful research can help critique, design, and improve policy. He is a Programme Director and Associate Professor at the Brussels School of Governance (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), Senior Lecturer at the University of Amsterdam, and Professorial Fellow at UNU-CRIS in Brugges.

The conversation will be moderated by Jan Aart Scholte, Professor of Global Transformations and Governance Challenges at Leiden University.

What are #DemocracyDrinks?

Our #DemocracyDrinks bring together democracy advocates, thinkers and enthusiasts to connect in an informal setting. As a valuable opportunity for networking, the event will be all about making new contacts and catching up with people you know. You can test new ideas; plan common initiatives; and find moral support and inspiration.

#DemocracyDrinks were launched by Defend Democracy in Brussels in 2018. And, since then, the idea has taken off. #DemocracyDrinks have taken place around the world, including in Washington DC, Berlin, Kathmandu and The Hague.
