Cultural Emergency Response: Documenting the Destruction of Heritage & Seeking Solutions

15 May @ 6:30 pm 9:00 pm

Join CER on Wednesday 15th May from 18:30 to 21:00 at The Hague Humanity Hub for a special panel talk (‘Documenting the Destruction of Heritage & Seeking Solutions’) commemorating the 70th anniversary of the 1954 Hague Convention, the cornerstone treaty for the protection of cultural heritage under threat. This event is hosted in collaboration with Cultural Emergency Response, the Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative, and Blue Shield International.

CER is thrilled to feature Vasyl Rozhko who will highlight his crucial work with the Heritage Monitoring Lab (HeMo), focused on the documentation and mapping of cultural heritage destruction in Ukraine. This initiative plays a pivotal role in collecting evidence to support Ukraine’s case against Russia in the International Criminal Court for crimes against cultural heritage. Accompanying Rozhko are esteemed heritage experts who will delve into historical applications of the treaty, highlighting its enduring impact on heritage protection:

  • Emma Cunliffe will explore the 1954 Hague Convention’s implementation and its role in preparedness and collaboration.
  • Marina Lostal will address how the protection of cultural property has evolved from the 1954 Hague Convention, including its connection to human rights.
  • Moderated by Dr. Bijan Rouhani.

The evening will conclude with a drinks reception, allowing for extended conversations with our panelists and partners.
