Movies That Matter On Tour – On The Fringe

11 February @ 3:00 pm 5:00 pm

Three interweaving stories of people overtaken by economic despair. Azucena has 24 hours to prevent her family from being evicted. Lawyer Rafa wants to know where the police took a young immigrant girl. And Teodora desperately tries to reach her son. Starring Spanish giants Penélope Cruz, Adelfa Calvo and Luis Tosar.

Overview:

On Tour is a spin-off of the Movies that Matter Festival. Each year, they select eight great festival titles that they aim to offer a wide platform throughout the country. In cooperation with (currently) seventeen film theatres and local volunteer groups, they screen a film or documentary that matters, every month from October to May. The screenings are accompanied by in-depth programmes and guest speakers arranged by local groups. In this way, dialogue and broadening perspectives in local contexts is encouraged.

Movie Summary:

Rafa (Luis Tosar) is a driven activist lawyer trying to find a glimmer of humanity among the government institutions. When he sees the young daughter of immigrant worker Badia, one of his clients, being taken by the police, he spurts into action. But while fighting the good fight, he neglects his stepson Raúl and his pregnant wife Helena. Supermarket employee Azucena (Penélope Cruz) is a day away from being evicted from her home together with her young son. She’s at her wits end, trying to mobilise people to come to her aid. Teodora (Adelfa Calvo) is desperately trying to reach her son Germán. She keeps calling, and he sees it. Why doesn’t he pick up the phone?

For all three, the pressure mounts and their day becomes a race against the clock. Urgent social thriller set in Madrid, about people trying to survive in a privatised society.
