Dorothea Hilhorst appointed as member of the supervisory board
The Hague Humanity Hub is pleased to announce the appointment of a new member to its supervisory board: Dorothea Hilhorst, Professor of Humanitarian Studies at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam.
Thea will provide advice and support in the realization of the objectives of the organisation with her unique insight gained from her experience and research at the nexus of humanitarian issues, peacebuilding and development.
“I am very pleased to welcome Thea to the board,” says Arjan Hehenkamp, Chairperson. “Her in-depth academic experience with humanitarianism and human rights, her extensive network and demonstrated drive to continuously connect and develop community initiatives will bring great value to the Hub”.
Thea replaces Mirjam de Bruijn. “We are pleased that Mirjam will continue to be connected to the Humanity Hub through the membership of her foundation Voice 4 Thought. I would like to thank Mirjam for her thoughtful contributions in the Humanity Hub’s first phase of development.”
Thea Hilhorst is an expert in development in areas affected by disaster, conflict or fragility, with a special focus on aid-society relations: the impact of humanitarian aid on society and the ways in which people and institutions shape the organisation of aid relations.
Since 2015, she has been active as Professor of Humanitarian Studies at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam. From 2006 to 2017, she was Special Chair for Humanitarian Aid and Reconstruction at Wageningen University.
In addition to her academic research, Thea maintains a portfolio for applied assignments and advisory work, which has enhanced an intimate knowledge base of international organisational processes and local dynamics of aid-state-society interaction. She is the president of the International Humanitarian Studies Association and a board member of the Core Humanitarian Standard Alliance.
Thea shared the following about her appointment:
“The Humanity Hub brings together organizations with a pedigree in justice, peacebuilding, development, and humanitarian action, among others. Those different types of organizations have a lot in common and often focus on cross-cutting issues, but historically they have developed more or less separately from each other, almost to the level of being silos.
In today’s world, more than ever before, there is a lot to gain from interaction between these different domains and discovering where the commonalities lie. As they come together in the Humanity Hub, the Hub can provide a platform where different organisations can learn from each other and collaborate around shared challenges.”
