DESCRIPTION:During an interesting science night in Amsterdam\, professor Thea Hilhorst\, will give a 15 minute lecture on why the humanitarian aid system needs to be fixed. \n\n\n\nCurrently\, 135 million people in the world rely on humanitarian aid because of war\, persecution\, poverty and climate-related disasters. Climate change is a game changer: expectations are that many more people all over the world will be forced to flee their homes. It’s impossible for humanitarian agencies and NGOs to keep up with this number of people in need. The traditional ways of providing aid are no longer working in this new era. Thea Hilhorst will explain why and how humanitarian aid needs to be fixed. He will consider how they perceive and experience the current anti-trafficking practices\, looking into the harms that the current anti-trafficking system in India is introducing into their lives. \n\n\n\nHe looks specifically at the experiences of migrant sex workers and construction workers in India. \nThe presentation will highlight the role that agency\, citizenship and ‘unfreedom’ plays in migrants’ experiences. These migrants are often seen as ‘victims of trafficking’ by anti-trafficking stakeholders\, despite the fact that they do not see themselves in this light. This view by stakeholders causes harm to the migrants as it places them in a position of victimhood\, hence denying them their agency. \nThe migrants use the concept of citizenship as a form of belonging to struggle against and deal with these harmful interventions by anti-trafficking stakeholders. \nBackground\nThe dominant global discourse of human trafficking has been largely sketched as a campaign against the exploitation of human being. However\, the everyday realities of those who are framed as ‘trafficked victims’ indicates that the voices of these migrants are made invisible\, ignored or silenced. Such silencing (re)produces the harms and sufferings in their lives. \nIndia’s anti-trafficking system is not immune to such practices and (re)production of these harms. This presentation by Jaffer Latief Nafar is based on the biographic narratives\, observations and experiences of migrant sex workers and migrant construction workers in India. He has engaged with these workers as part of his ongoing research in parts of Kolkata\, particularly Sonagachi\, Asia’s largest red-light district. For over a decade now\, PII has been working to establish a metrics-based approach to measure and price the value of peace. The result was the Hague Peace Data Standard. \nIt measures various dimensions of real-time interactions\, between both individuals and groups. These are measured in the form of episodes of engagement\, across difference boundaries\, to determine the environmental and social impacts of both human behavior\, and of the mediating technologies people use to engage with each other in their daily lives. \n  \nMeasuring Peace: The Hague Peace Data Standard will examine peace data through the following four research directions: \n\nGroup identities: the characteristics of an individual that connect them to a group dynamic (e.g. Hindu\, Jew\, Christian or Muslim)\nDifference boundaries: the common characteristics of the differences in the group identities between any two individuals\, (e.g. Religion in the previous example)\nEpisodes of engagement: the unilateral sub-components of interactions between individuals.\nLongitudinal data: in which the sequence of engagement episodes over time is essential to understand which chains of interaction behavior\, in which order\, lead to sustainable peace.\n\nIf you’re interested about learning how you\, as an engineer\, can measure your impact\, and learn more about building peace into your process\, register before spots are taken! P. S. Special discounts available for students and people in academia! \nFor more information on how PeaceTech will impact the future of engineering\, please watch this video. \nRead more about the HPDS here. \nOutcome\nBe a part of defining the future of Peace Measurement. In this week-long interactive workshop we will come together with the most brilliant minds on the planet (that’s you) to define the research directions and increase their precision so that we can use these as actual units of measurement when collecting data within companies. Many people choose to avoid confrontations and forgo having to negotiate\, in fear of going into an unpleasant situation or sabotaging their relationship with others. \nIn this 2.5 hour workshop\, you will be introduced to the basics of negotiation and communicating your position\, by identifying different types of behavior taking place in communication and build a listening style that helps to assert your needs and concerns. You will also identify the main elements that make a good negotiation and get the chance to practice different tools in order to negotiate and achieve suitable outcomes. \nThis workshop is aimed at young professionals from various sectors\, students\, and anyone with little to no prior experience with negotiation and wants to get introduced to the subject. \nThe session will be run by Dr. Tareq Omairi\, a Learning & Development expert\, Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy\, and a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Dr. Omairi will bring the experience of working in Academic\, Scientific\, and International Relations disciplines\, to help participants in recognizing what it takes to build understanding and trust when working with stakeholders coming from different backgrounds\, priorities\, and mindsets. \nWe’ll begin by getting lunch at 12:00 (bring your own or purchase at the Hub Cafe)\, with the workshop commencing afterwards. They can also be significant drivers of sustainable development\, opening doors to knowledge\, education and the labour market\, improving and simplifying communication and creating opportunities for new business ideas. When they are used in health care or education\, for example\, digital innovations can help improve living conditions\, especially those of disadvantaged social groups. Also\, these innovations have the potential to assist with realising climate goals. \nAnno 2020\, the world is moving towards a new era in which digital innovations need to be integrated within broader (digital) existing ecosystems to create actual impact and stay sustainable. However\, too often the development sector is developing (expensive) stand-alone digital solutions that do not reach their full potential because existing (digital) ecosystems were not taking into account during the development phase. \nLet’s go on a The Digital Journey\nThis year\, The Spindle – as the innovation platform of Partos – will facilitate a so-called Digital Journey for the connected and intrapreneurial innovators of Dutch development organisations\, the so-called Linking Pins. Together they’ll explore digital commonalities such as tools and ways of working that various development organisations already work with or wish to start working with. After\, the LinkingPins will form Joint Action Groups that work together during facilitated events and build an actual product. \nAs an inspiration\, Alexander Medik from Aidsfonds Soa Aids Nederland will share examples of how their Stepped Care Model is providing a system through which various digital health solutions (websites\, chatbots\, educational games\, etc.) can reach their full potential by being integrated within a broader (digital) ecosystem. Examples will be provided from the Netherlands\, Kenya and South-Africa. \nRegistration for this event is mandatory! If you want to join\, get in touch with Alex! Here are some of the current open projects: \n> Workgroup “Peace & Justice Cafe”\nImagine a monthly event at the Hub bringing together the diverse Hague ecosystem\, allowing interested parties to plug in their content to this platform\, followed by networking/drinks. Are you interested in shaping this? Join the first workgroup meeting this Wednesday at 11:00 in the Hub Cafe (12 Feb). \n> Community of practice: fundraising and partnerships\nThe idea is to connect individuals responsible/interested in topics like fundraising and partnerships. The mission would be to share\, actively cooperate and collaborate on various funding opportunities with the members of the Hub. Interested? Reach out to Petra Novakova (International Alert) via Slack or let the team know. \n> Community of practice for SDG 16+\nTogether with HiiL\, the Humanity Hub is launching a community of practice for Sustainable Development Goal 16! It will be a loose alliance of actors in this sector\, and beyond\, that connects\, exchanges and works together in furtherance of achieving SDG16. The kick-off will be on Friday 6 March at 3pm. Let Katie (HiiL) or Alex (Hub) know if you are interested! We will be joined by The Hague Tech Alliance and the Asser Institute\, who will be sharing their innovation stories. This will be followed up by an energetic and interactive session on collaborative learning facilitated by Butterfly works. \nSpeakers:\nThe Hague Tech Alliance – Paul Verhagen\nPersonal Background: \nPaul is a Data Scientist at The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS) which is a member of the The Hague Tech Alliance. His work focuses predominantly on security\, geopolitics and data. Prior to joining HCSS\, Paul interned at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he worked on global cyber capacity. \nProject Summary: \nThe Agrifood Dashboard measures Dutch interests in agri-food through trade\, development aid\, and infrastructure. The project Paul will present offers a one-stop-shop for all information available on agrifood and allows policymakers to quickly and thoroughly ask concrete and specific questions based on data driven insights. \nAsser Institute – Rebecca Mignot-Mahdavi\nPersonal Background: \nRebecca is a researcher in International Law and Counter-terrorism at the T.M.C. Asser Institute in The Hague in the ‘Human Dignity and Human Security in International and European Law’ strand. Her work reflects on counterterrorism and\, more precisely\, on our evolving legal and policy capacity to deal with security threats\, where new forms of non-state transnational risk\, counter-risk strategy and technology are in play. \nProject Summary: \nThe digital revolution has led us to build virtual identities. Simultaneously\, modern states have acquired unprecedented capacities to collect data about everyone in a timely and almost invisible manner. How can our data be used to counter-terrorism in a legal\, democratic and trustworthy way? Citizens are consulted and informed. The project Rebecca will present aims at building a bridge between the state and its citizens in regulating the use of big data in security practices. This bridge will take the form of a mobile App aimed at directly consulting (and informing) citizens of four European countries to start with on the role they would be willing to play in supporting (or not) their government to face current security threats (eg. by sharing their data). \n\nDCHI will be hosting regular Focal Point Café meetings in 2020. Here we will highlight humanitarian innovation cases and relevant themes\, as well as exploring best practices and lessons learnt from various organisations. This will be done in a casual ‘café-like’ setting to encourage our coalition to network and collaborate.\nEach meeting will be lead by one of our focal points\, from our 6 board member organisations: Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, Ministry of Defence\, The Netherlands Red Cross\, CARE Netherlands\, UNICEF and The City of The Hague.
