CER also works with heritage communities to prepare for crises and mitigate potential risks to cultural heritage. Beyond emergency response, CER’s wider purpose is to make global heritage protection more inclusive, sustainable and locally-led, notably by training heritage experts, sharing expertise and experience, and advocating the recognition of cultural heritage rescue as a crucial aspect of humanitarian relief, recovery, development and peacebuilding.

At the Sustainable Media Lab, we bring together leading researchers, experts, and practitioners to explore what more sustainable media systems could look like. Institute for International Criminal Investigations

The IICI is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation dedicated to the capacity-building and support of international criminal and human rights investigators and related professionals in the investigation of war crimes, genocide crimes against humanity and serious human rights violations, and to strengthening international investigation best practices and standards.

IICI was founded at the time of the establishment of the International Criminal Court, in recognition that, despite the more widespread application of international criminal law, there was no comprehensive training programme for investigators of international crimes.

Since its inception, IICI has trained and mentored hundreds of investigators across the world in the hard skills and techniques necessary to acquire evidence of a standard which will stand up to scrutiny in criminal courts, human rights commissions and elsewhere, and allow perpetrators of mass atrocities to be brought to justice.  We conduct our regular courses in The Netherlands.  Our bespoke capacity-building and technical advisory projects are delivered globally, from Asia, the Middle East and Europe to Africa and Latin America.

Course participants and project beneficiaries include national war crimes units, the International Criminal Court, the OHCHR and other UN agencies, UN and other peacekeeping missions and forces, national human rights bodies, and local and international NGOs.  IICI is the training provider for Justice Rapid Response (JRR) in relation to its rapid-deployment roster of experts and for JRR-UN Women in relation to their sub-roster of SGBV experts.

IICI teaches core skills, but also seeks to develop new ones amongst the international criminal investigation community, including most recently:

  • investigating conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV)
  • international crimes affecting children
  • collection and evaluation of open-source evidence of international crimes
  • investigating financial dimensions of international crimes

IICI contributes to the development, clarification and strengthening of international investigations standards and best practices through our capacity-building and experts’ advisory work, including written guidelines to plug gaps, such as the IICI guidelines for investigating conflict-related sexual violence against men and the forthcoming IICI guidelines for investigating international crimes affecting children.

IICI has also supported the development and implementation of the International Protocol on the Documentation and Investigation of Sexual Violence in Conflict (1st and 2nd editions), including through training and mentoring projects and by developing training materials accompanying the protocol and developing supplements to the protocol for Myanmar, Iraq and Sri Lanka.

IICI’s most recent contribution to the policy field is in leading the collaborative global initiative to develop the Global Code of Conduct for the Documentation and Investigation of Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (the “Murad Code”).

New Start+

NewStartPlus believes in the resilience and motivation of newcomers. They are building a new life in the Netherlands – and contributing to the future of the country. However, the path to a new life is challenging: a new language, a new culture, leaving behind much that was dear in another country. A helping hand in finding a job makes a difference, as experience has shown. We are happy to assist with that. At NewStartPlus, we provide a springboard for success. We connect newcomers with (almost) retirees: our volunteers. We carefully match the volunteer with the newcomer, ensuring proper guidance and support for the volunteer as a ‘newcomer coach.’ NewStartPlus primarily focuses on people who have recently retired or are about to retire. They possess significant (professional) knowledge, a broad network, and often a strong motivation to help newcomers. We offer them a meaningful transition to a new phase in their lives.

Piero Gandini

Piero Gandini accompanies organizations, teams, and individuals in their transformation journeys.

Former Humanitarian Aid Worker and Diplomat, Piero gets inspired and motivated by projects where organizations and individuals are keen to engage in a transformative experience to create better futures and, at the same time, be a better version of themselves.

His methodology is experiential, not theoretical, based on curiosity, creativity, courage, and playfulness.

By challenging the status quo of conventional thinking on teams and individuals he motivates exploration, collaboration, cocreation, ownership, and a non-conformist attitude.

With care and kindness, people usually hear from Piero what nobody dares to tell them. This encourages people to THINK and DO differently while experiencing the amazing things that happen when you start seeing the same situation from a different perspective.

As a Mentor or Facilitator, he has a tailor-made approach accordingly to the specificities. The range includes out-of-the-box workshops, inspirational events, and many other non-conventional experiences.

Some of the themes you can engage with Piero are:

Inclusion, Creativity, Inner Development Goals (IDGs), Change, Non-binary and Out-of-the-box thinking, Leadership, People-Centered Management, Disruption, and for sure quite vivid conversations about life, the universe of creativity, music & art, innovation, and good doses of laughs.

Project Expedite Justice: Project Expedite Justice (PEJ), founded in 2016, is a United States-based NGO with 501(c)(3) charitable organization designation. PEJ’s mission is to use all available legal options to seek justice for individuals inadequately protected under the law, who cannot access legal resources, and who are exploited by governments, corporations, or others. PEJ applies a novel, victim-centered approach to addressing mass atrocities. PEJ’s 3-step model includes training, mentoring, and providing independent legal consulting. We partner with and train local lawyers and investigators to collect, analyze, and preserve evidence according to international legal standards. Without evidence, there can be no accountability. We further build local capabilities and advance the justice process through case-specific mentoring and strategic guidance to local legal practitioners and investigators. Finally, we partner with local NGOs, pro bono law firms, and legal clinics to represent victims of international crimes and serious human rights abuses in court or alternative judicial mechanisms. PEJ has projects in several countries, including Ukraine, Sudan, Ethiopia and the DRC. Our inclusive team includes people working remotely from Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, and the US. We are deeply committed to increasing opportunities for lawyers and other human rights defenders from the global majority or global south to participate in international rule-of-law-based nonprofit work.

The Hague’s Centre of Expertise on Global Governance “New Actors, New Solutions”
Our mission is to increase the understanding by (future) professionals of how global governance works in practice. Inspired by the field of climate governance, we understand global governance as a network of different interdependent actors that together can solve global problems. Our unique polycentric approach studies global problems with the people directly involved in those problems. Fundamentally, we study what those people do, how they do it, and how their practices can be improved. This allows us to unpack global governance into more local practices of new and underrepresented actors and to develop new collaborative solutions to global problems.

War Childhood Museum

The War Childhood Museum (WCM) is an independent human-centered museum dedicated exclusively to childhoods affected by armed conflicts. It developed from the crowd-sourced book War Childhood and opened its doors in 2017, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, seven years into its research and development phase. The Museum’s collection consists of over 5.000 personal objects, and hundreds of hours of oral history testimonies from more than 15 armed conflicts such as Syrian Civil War, War in Afghanistan, War in Donbas, Second World War. Because of its focus on experiences of children, the Museum is in a unique position to offer inspirational, politically neutral narratives, which transcends ethnonational divides. Therefore, it is apt to play a valuable role in the reconciliation process in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as in other conflict-affected areas. As such, the WCM has expanded its activities to contemporary conflict, post-conflict, and resettlement zones, becoming an international platform that gives voice to current and former conflict-affected children. Today, the WCM has offices in Sarajevo, Kyiv, New York City, and The Hage.

Besides exhibition, research, and community engagement, the WCM also plays a major role in education. It has developed and is implementing educational activities for students and teachers, with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of providing a peaceful world for future generations.

In 2018, the WCM was awarded the Council of Europe Museum Prize – one of the most prestigious awards in the museum industry – as part of the European Museum of the Year Awards.

Wavemakers United

Wavemakers United is a community of students, young professionals, and athletes with a passion for water. As a youth organization we focus on local challenges while having a global reach with the aim to contribute to the UN2030 SDGs and involve as many youngsters as possible. After the launch of Wavemakers United during the World Expo in Dubai, a globally oriented team has started on the expansion of the Wavemakers-community. The first result being this Challenge, in collaboration with IHE Delft. We believe that the UN2023 Water Conference can be a key moment towards 2030 in accelerating youth-engagement for sustainability. This also means that New York will not be the end of this project, nor our organization. We move beyond to keep creating local impact. We believe that through sports, education and positive energy we reach communities that are hard to reach. To activate these communities, let them create their own capacity to become climate resilient, and to bring together the whole world for sustainability and water.
