Survivor-Centred Care Provision in Conflict Zones: Insights from Ukraine

30 March, 2023 @ 5:00 pm 6:00 pm

Join us this Thursday (30 March) for a Knowledge Sharing session with Fedir (Freddy) Dunebabin, Programme Manager in Ukraine with the Dr Denis Mukwege Foundation. Reflecting on his experiences in Ukraine, Freddy will share challenges of coordinating and delivering care to survivors of sexual violence in an ongoing conflict and how humanitarian workers and other partners can support survivors better in the future.

Freddy will share his experience in working with the Ukrainian survivors network: SEMA Ukraine, and with the Ukrainian government, to establish a clear path for survivors of sexual violence to access help, while minimising risks of further harm. Without coordinated holistic referral pathways, survivors of conflict-related sexual violence may be subjected to re-traumatisation by a variety of care providers, including hospital staff and security forces, who may ask them to repeat their stories of assault multiple times while referring them from one facility to another. The Mukwege Foundation team will share key elements necessary for ensuring survivor-centred holistic care for victims of conflict-related sexual violence, based on their experiences in Ukraine and elsewhere.

About Freddy Dunebabin and The Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation

Freddy Dunebabin is the Programme Manager in Ukraine at the Dr Denis Mukwege Foundation in Ukraine. The Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation is committed to supporting Ukraine in implementing comprehensive survivor-centred holistic care, in the current context and its team has extensive expertise in this field.

The Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation is an international human rights organisation working together with survivors of conflict-related sexual violence from around the world. Drawing attention to the most shameful crimes committed during conflicts, the Foundation envisions a world in which sexual violence as a weapon of war is no longer tolerated. Together with its special adviser, the Congolese gynaecologist and women’s rights activist Dr Denis Mukwege, the Foundation works for a future where survivors worldwide receive the holistic care they need and obtain reparations; where they have the freedom to speak out and organise globally to end wartime sexual violence.
