People’s Tribunal on the Murder of Journalists

2 November, 2021 @ 9:00 am 6:00 pm

In an unprecedented effort to seek justice, Free Press Unlimited, Reporters Without Borders and the Committee to Protect Journalists have established a People’s Tribunal on the Murder of Journalists, to investigate and hold governments accountable.

The Tribunal, a form of grassroots justice, relies on investigations and high quality legal analysis involving specific cases in Syria, Mexico and Sri Lanka.

The opening hearing, convened in The Hague, introduces impunity for the murders of journalists as a systemic issue. The Prosecution team, led by Almudena Bernabeu and supported by Howard Morrison QC of Guernica37 International Justice Chambers, hears witnesses and presents evidence on the impact of impunity on journalists and people’s right to information. Witnesses include among others: Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa, Hatice Cengiz, academic and researcher in Middle Eastern studies and widow of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi who was murdered in 2018, Matthew Caruana Galizia, son of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia who was murdered in 2017, and Russia’s leading human rights lawyer, Karinna Moskalenko.
