Just Peace Movie Night: SEMA

8 March, 2023 @ 6:00 pm 9:00 pm

This first Just Peace Movie Night of 2023 is being held on the International Women’s Day, celebrating the social, economic, political and cultural achievements of women worldwide, and also acknowledging the fact that there is so much more to be achieved for women’s equality.

International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women, who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

As part of this, Just Peace is teaming up with the SEMA Network and the Dr. Denis Mukwege Foundation to screen the award-winning film ‘SEMA’. The film sheds lights on the struggles and bravery of women affected by sexual violence in times of conflict.

After the screening, there will be a moderated discussion, to focus on why it is important to give women and victims of sexual violence a voice and help them to own their narrative in the process of healing and recovery, and ultimately justice.

SEMA (meaning Speak out in Swahili) is written and acted by survivors of sexual violence in Congo and directed by Macherie Ekwa Bahango. This gripping film features the stories of two women who fell victim to the ongoing sexual violence facing the Democratic Republic of Congo. Written collectively by the DRC Momement of Survivors, the film will take you through their heartbreaks as well as their fight to find hope and Justice.

The film screening will be followed by recorded messages from the director of the film and women survivors and a moderated discussion on gender based violence and women owning their narrative with our guest speakers:

– Dominique Vidale Plaza, Senior Programme Manager Holistic Care, Mukwege Foundation

– Dr. Sanne Weber, Senior Programme Officer at Impunity Watch
