Frits Kalshoven International Humanitarian Law Competition: Moot Court Finals

11 March, 2022 @ 5:00 pm 6:00 pm

On behalf of Marieke van Schaik, CEO of The Netherlands Red Cross, and Laurette Steenssens, President of Belgian Red Cross-Flanders, we hereby warmly invite you to the moot court finals of the 15th edition of the Frits Kalshoven Competition in the Peace Palace.

The Frits Kalshoven International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Competition aims to encourage students from Dutch and Belgian universities to enhance their knowledge of IHL. After having followed several expert lectures since October 2021, nine teams of three students will compete in several role-play activities and workshops on 9 and 10 March.

On the last day of the competition, all teams will plead a fictious case in the moot court preliminary rounds, after which two teams will successfully reach the finals. We are honoured to welcome four highly respected IHL legal experts as this year’s judges for the moot court final rounds:
 • Alphons Orie, Judge at the UN International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals,
 • Dr. Liesbeth Lijnzaad, Judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and law professor at Maastricht University,
 • Colonel Chris De Cock, Legal Advisor at the European External Action Service, and
 • Marleen Hendriks, Investigative Judge for international crimes at the Court of The Hague
