Ecocide: from Amazonia to Oceania to The Hague. Bringing voices together towards a common goal

16 December, 2021 @ 1:00 pm 5:00 pm

In the margins of the 20th session of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute (ASP), No Peace Without Justice and Seja Legal Campaign are organising a conference on ecocide as part of its ongoing project “Amazonia Beyond the Crisis; Accountability for deforestation: preventing further violations against human rights and protecting against continuous environmental and economic destructions”.

This event aims to contribute to the ongoing discussions about ecocide and to build political will towards criminalising ecocide at the national and international levels. More importantly, it will invite global leaders who will have gathered on the occasion of the 20th session of the ASP in the Hague to commit and actively join this journey towards more stringent environmental protections through the lens of criminal justice. In this context, the event will also enrich the ongoing discussions by bringing direct perspectives, testimonies, and expertise of those who are most affected by environmental destruction into the debate. Finally, it is aimed at launching a deeper analysis that will tackle the intersectionality between criminalising ecocide and protecting human rights, including indigenous rights.
