Discussion: Dilemmas of transitional justice in post-conflict societies “Balancing the interests of local and international actors, case studies of Iraq and Angola”

In this lecture-discussion you will get a general introduction to transitional justice and will learn what this entails in practice through case studies of Iraq and Angola. After the presentations there will be room for questions and discussion. We will finish with drinks and networking.

General introduction about transitional justice

Dr. Joris van Wijk, expert in transitional justice at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, will give a general introduction about transitional justice. Transitional justice is a process which responds to massive human rights violations through judicial redress, political reforms in a region or country, and other measures to prevent the recurrence of human rights abuse.

Two case studies on Iraq and Angola

Mohammad Hossein Mojtahedi of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Maarten van Munster of The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS) will present case studies on Iraq respectively Angola.

Students can ask questions and engage in discussion with the presenters.
